Hello kind reader, Sorry for the slow answers to emails, the lack of comments on flickr, and the lack photos on flickr, blogger, and SPAMletters. I have had only minutes on the computer. I mean to do all these things sooner or later - later is more likely. M20Oct08-10.30met,Skanderborg lby,20km WSW of Århus,IBM,hp,IBM,Logitech,? I had a quick look at Skanderborg kirke with a steeple on a ball, a south crossing and no north door. The nave ended with a short choir and a small round apse. I look at many churches and the best way in a few minutes, I think, is to walk round twice, clockwise and anti. If you can get in, so much the better. In Århus, the domkirke is open in the week,10-15, for tourists but only for services at the weekend. In Århus, it was raining but I found a dry spot under a railway bridge. It was a busy line with passenger trains, mostly two or three coaches, every few minutes, but only one or two goods trains. W22Oct08-10.30met,Horsens lby,Compaq,hp,hp,Logitech,? What I did not learn till I walked out, is that Skanderborg had a 'borg' built on a small island. Valdemar den store/the great built the first in 1171. It was rebuilt in the 1600s, with bastions. When it was torn down, they kept the chapel as sogne kirke/parish church, and one tower, which are still there. There is some forest round the former 'borg' so I walked to the last lamp-post and kipped there - handy for getting up in the dark! I found a copy of the world renowned Jyllands Posten/The Jutlands Post local rag - but without the Mohammed cartoons. I thought it was quite a good newspaper. F24Oct08-10.20met,Vejle lby,IBM,Samsung,IBM,IBM,? I walked a few km south of Horsens to find a skipper under two big beeches by the road - I'm glad they did not cut them down. I think this is the skipper I found when I walked this road in 2004. In the night I heard the hoot of a tawny owl and also the sqeal of a rabbit, but no cropped grass or droppings. The next morning the fourth quarter moon, between Cancer and Leo was so high that it threw a dark shadow. When I drank from a puddle near the skipper, I saw the star Capella, in the water. The seeing was not good though, as I could not see the Milky Way, or any stars in the Square of Pegasus, which was low in the west. Denmark has the highest tax in the world - 49% of GDP. Money wise, of the three "crowns", Dansk,DKK, Norsk,NOK, and Svensk,SEK, the SEK is the weakest - 113 SEK for 100 NOK, and 134 SEK for 100 DKK. In Danish loos, there is a big flush and a small flush, big on the left and small on the right. Many symbols tell you which is which. Denmark is nearly as flat as Holland. The landscape has been shaped by the ice sheets, and the hills are moraines, rubble and boulders left behind when the ice sheets melted - I quote an information board south of Frederikshavn. Cycle paths are beside about 2 in 3 km of the roads I have walked - RV180 and RV170. Thankyou Denmark! These roads are quite busy even though the E45 motorway runs alongside. When there is no cycle path, walking in the dark is a bit stressful. Sa25Oct08-10.50met,Kolding lby,?,Samsung,hp,hp,? Vejle had a long main shopping street - Nørregade/North street(gate), Bygade/Town street, by the old Rådhus/Town hall, Søndregade/South street to the bridge over Vejle river. The old town hall had a handy WC. This morning the fourth quarter rose as I was getting up. The sunlit crescent was bright and the rest could clearly be seen in the earthshine. Orion was in the south, above Lepus and two southern stars of Canis Major. I try to tell myself that I could also see some of Eridanus, but I do not have sharp eyesight ... ... unlike Hevel/Hevelius Czech astronomer, 1680(?) working for King John Sobieski of Poland, who had the eyesight of a lynx. Near the plough he named a new group of stars, Lynx, because, it is said, he was the only one who could see them! Sobieski sent an army to help fight off the Turks at the gates of Vienna, Austria. That was as far as the Turks got into Europe. So Hevel named a small group of stars, Scutum Sobieskii/Shield of Sobieski. Today they are called Scutum. I can't recall where it is. PS Wikipedia says Scutum is between Aquila "Altair", and Sagittarius, and Hevelius' Czech name was Hewelke. M27Oct08-10.50met,Haderslev lby,Plextor,Mirai,Logitech,?,? Haderslev has a tall brick Gothic cathedral, that was built as a collegiate church in 1270. It became a cathedral in 1922 with the reunification of Denmark after WWI, in the new independent diocese of Haderslev. Before, it had been in the diocese of Schleswig, and was the first Danish Lutheral church in 1525. The church lost its west tower and two chapels in the town fire of 1627. Rain has fallen the last two days, so I have read my way through a copy of Friday's Morgen Avisen/Jyllands Posten while rain fell. W29Oct08-10.25met,Aabenraa lby,Dell,Dell,Dell,Compaq,? Today in Aabenraa, the last town in Denmark before the German border. Big celebrations were held with King Christian X riding through on a white horse, on July 10th, 1920, when these towns in South Jylland became Danish again - gen forening/again for-one-ing/reunification - since Bismarck in 1864. Christian X was also the king, I believe, who wore a yellow star in WWII, when the jews all had to wear one. DANISSSH! bacon - Denmark has many pig farms. At Edeka supermarked south of Kolding, I bought 500 gm of "svine fedt/pig fat", something I have never seen before. On the outside it says, protein - 0%, carbohydrate - 0%, fat - 100% and 900 Calories/3700 kJ in each 100gm. I think that is the most Calories you can get in any food, which I think good as I am always looking for Calories. F31Oct08-13.30met,StadtBibliotek Flensburg,?,Fujitsu-Siemens,F-J,F-J,? The cold snap I feared has come about 0 C, and frost in the open fields. I have more than enough gear to see me through the cold so far. No snow has fallen so far. Spiders, beetles and a weevil are crawling over me even though it is the end of October.
Best wishes to all, Robert diary http://sdapp.blogspot.com/ flickr photos http://flickr.com/photos/the-reindeer attached photos 1 W22Oct A murky day seen from the Kulturhuset of Skanderborg overlooking the fjord. 2 F24Oct Danish war hero, Admiral Tordenskjold(1691-1720), from the Great Northern War, 1690-1720, between Denmark and Sweden - the statue is in Frederikshavn which was his base I believe. 3 W29Oct Koldinghus, a huge Danish castle, some of which burned down in 1808, 200 years ago.
