Hello kind reader,.
Sorry for the slow answers to emails, the lack of comments on flickr, and the lack photos on flickr, blogger, and SPAMletters. I have had only minutes on the computer. I mean to do all these things sooner or later - later is more likely.

It started on Saturday, 1st. I took the underground from Edgware Road to Liverpool St. Then the overground to Enfield Lock, which is the last station on my Freedom Pass, and the first on my map. I had a look at Waltham Cross and Waltham Abbey. Near the Lee Navigation I found a small wood to rest my weary limbs on the first day. I was hoping to walk along the Lee Navigation but there are footpath works and the footpath is shut.. So, on Sunday, I walked along the old A10, now A1170, through Hoddesdon. Hoddesdon has a lot of coaching inns, now pubs, (like Ware) and I kipped on the A10 link behind a big laurel bush.

The weather turned warmer last night, with my thermometer reading 7C. The night before was cold after a clear night, followed by a good frost, but not enough to worry the system!
I got my first negative reading of -0.4C, and the display was a bit slow.

This morning, I walked the short two hours from north of Peterboro' to Market Deeping - a nice small town, on the river Welland, in Lincolnshire on the border with Cambridgeshire. There was some rain last night so I caught up on my water needs from a few puddles. There was a red sunrise under a layer of altocumulus in the east. Red morning, shepherd's warning! but it's bright sunlight now and a blue sky. You can never trust those forecasts!
Yesterday I was in Peterborough, with its Norman/Early English cathedral. Hereward the Wake, who tried to fight off William the Conqueror,1066, is a local hero. It seems William set up a castle at Cambridge to scupper the poor bloke. The castle mound is still there.

There was an awful lot of rain last Saturday/Sunday. It started about 6 after I had settled down in my bags and carried on all night. I am OK in the bags but I waited till sunrise to get up. The rain then carried on all Sunday morning. Again I was OK, thanks to my emergency Peter Storm jacket which I only use about 20 times a year - and that's why it is still waterproof after 4 years!
Yesterday I kipped beside RAF Waddington and a lot of Boeing Sentinel early warning planes took off - I counted about 15. There were also some Phantoms, which I think are German.
I was caught on the hop by some odd catkins, blown down by the wind. They were short, red and barrel-shaped. Then the penny dropped. They were long male catkins of the black poplar, which happened to be the tree above, but they had not had time to grow to full size.
Hoping I haven't rambled on too much, best wishes to all, Robert
