Hello kind reader,
Oxford canal was built 1790 to take goods from Birmingham to London, by the great pioneering canal engineer, James Brindley. If you want to go from A to B, don't go along a canal! I walked by the 26 mile to Leicester, marker on the canal. Then, up on the road, it said - 16 miles to Leicester. The Oxford canal wanders to and fro following hill 'n dale. But if you like to walk in the countryside, the canal is the best. The birds sing, the clegg flies sting (quite painful), there is much growth along the canal - at the moment much meadowsweet. There are many farms, fields, quite a lot of woodland - and no cars!
I walked along the road - A4304 to Market Harborough, as I had run out of food. I got there about a quarter to six before the bin men - the bane of all tramps - and found enough cold chips to ward off the pangs of hunger. Tesco Metro opened at 7, so I stocked up on my emergency reserves. The Grammer skool was built in 1612 by Robert Smyth, who was a big name in the city. He built it on posts, so that the market people could shelter underneath in rainy weather.
Yesterday morning I walked through Foxton junction which has the famous inclined plane, where there are now 10 locks. I had a look round, around dawn, and it is being made into a museum, I believe. There was a top dock, and a big iron carrier boat. It carried a narrow boat up or down the inclined plane, from or to, the bottom dock. I think it worked for less than 10 years before they gave up.
Today, I walked into Leicester, the biggest city so far. I kipped last night in a bit of woodland, on ivy ground cover, near the A6, and walked along the A6. The wood-framed Guildhall was built by the Corpus Christi guild in 1393. The cathedral looks like a big parish church that has been upgraded to a cathedral, but looks none the worse for that - late gothic? The castle is only a mound or 'motte' today, but St Mary de castro, the castle church, is still going strong. The Great Hall goes back to about 1150, but has an 'elegant brick facade' from 1695.
Best Wishes to all, from the tourist who goes on foot, Robert
PS Did you know? - Geoffrey Chaucer is said to have married in the 1360s in St Mary de castro, John of Gaunt one of his sponsors.
