Monday,19th June,2006 - 10.23bst, in Marlborough library, computer 58, downstairs
The weather is a bit cloudy, blowing in from the SW. There has already been some rain this morning, but the forecast is cloud with sunny spells. Tomorrow, all being well, I go back to the Kennet & Avon canal and carry on eastwards towards Newbury.

Hello kind reader,

Sorry if I am slow in answering emails, as I have not spent much time on a computer.

I was treated to a cuppa in Bradford. I was reading in a small park by the TIC, near the river, when I was asked to tea by Mark, at the Old Baptist Chapel, which goes back to the 1600's. Mark is, I believe, a lay preacher. Once there, I met Pat who is/was South African and has a Dutch grandmother. We talked about many things, Evolution and Creationism, and whether South Africa will do as well in the next 10 years as it has in the last 10 years.

I was walking along the tow path, when a tiny bird flew ahead of me and stopped in the middle of the path. A wren! I stopped too, and it stayed there for a couple of minutes - a tiny brown bird, with an upright tail. It reminded me of the farthings of 50 years ago. I have seen them flitting from bush to bush singing their song, but never clearly before. They are much easier heard than seen.

Marlborough is an old quiet market town. The High Street stretches from the old Anglo-Saxon (Saxon?) settlement, now called the Green, to the Norman castle in the West. The mound (motte?) is in the grounds of Marlborough College. William Golding - The Lord of the Flies, and Nobel Literature prize winner - lived at number 29, The Green. St Mary's and St Peter's churches, both old foundations, from the 1100's and 1400's, are at the East and West end of the High Street, though St Peter's is now redundant and museum/gallery/cafe.

Best wishes to all, Robert

PS I got caught in a thunderstorm a few days ago, but thanks to a water-proof hawthorn tree, I was alright.

A man of kindness to his beast is kind,
A brutal action shows a brutal mind.
Remember. He who made thee made the brute.
Who gave thee speech and rreason, formed him mute.
He can't complain, but God's all seeing eye
Beholds thy cruelty and hears his cry.
He was designed thy servant, not thy drudge.
Remember his creator is thy judge.
